RosehipWe often get asked what makes the Necessity brand of products so effective. They work amazingly well, they feel great on our skin and they even smell pretty good too. The answer is, quite simply, the fresh, natural, 100% pure essential and other plant oils that we use in our products.

While oils that can be extracted from plants by methods such as cold pressing are normally described as plant oils, only those that must be extracted by processes such as steam distillation, and which are indeed the very essence of the plant, can accurately be described as essential oils.

Here at Necessity, we use the terms “essential and other plant oils” when referring to the whole range of (steam-distilled) essential and cold-pressed plant oils. These oils are usually quite expensive due to the fact that it requires a relatively large quantity of plant material and a complex extraction process to produce pure essential oils.

At Necessity we do not compromise on quality, but our products provide you with blends of the best pure oils at the most economical prices possible.

Here are five of our all-time favourite essential and other plant oils, perfect for keeping skin hydrated and youthful looking and which feature as ingredients in Necessity’s skincare range.

  1. Lemongrass oil

Lemongrass has to be one of the most beautifully scented plants in existence and surprisingly rich with healing properties. Lemongrass oil acts as a gentle cleanser, adding a healthy glow to all skin types. Its sedative properties aid in countering sleep deprivation and the reduction of anxiety and irritability. The limonene in lemongrass acts as an anti-inflammatory and recent studies have shown it to be an effective antibacterial as well.

  1.  Lavender oil

The healing powers of lavender are well documented. The most famous case is that of chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, who, in 1910 used lavender essential oil to heal a severe chemical burn. The wound healed quickly and with little scarring, revealing the benefits of this well-loved herb. It is also an effective treatment for acne, eczema, headaches, insomnia, sunburn and to relieve stress and anxiety.

  1. Jojoba oil

Native to southern Arizona, California and north-western Mexico, jojoba oil is a favourite of the Native American tribes for both skin and hair care. The oil mimics sebum, a natural substance in human skin, vital for keeping your skin moisturised. Jojoba oil is also an excellent cleanser suitable for inflammatory skin conditions such as acne and eczema. It has the ability to reduce the effects of sunburn and is a blessing to dry, cracked lips, hands and feet.

  1.  Rosehip oil

The benefits of rosehip oil cannot be denied. It is full to the brim with antioxidants, essential fatty acids and vitamins to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Rosehip oil contains light moisturising properties and is highly absorbent, penetrating the skin for faster results. The oil also contains a high quantity of Vitamin C, ideal for treating dry skin and Vitamin A which supports sun-damaged skin.

  1. Sunflower Oil

The main reason we love sunflower oil is the high Vitamin E content which can protect collagen and elastin in the skin. Of course, we know it is also excellent for cooking, but when applied to your skin the effects are amazing. It can help with acne, eczema, scarring, and redness. It also makes a wonderful hydrating agent for all skin types.
